Irish Soda Bread Scones

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

I know St. Patrick’s Day was a week ago, but these Irish Soda Bread Scones are so tasty, they need to be shared! Plus, who needs a specific holiday to enjoy something as yummy as Irish Soda Bread Scones? These can (and should) be enjoyed all year round!

Irish Soda Bread Scones

Inspired by one of my favorite Irish treats, these Irish Soda Bread Scones are really easy to make. Just like traditional Irish Soda Bread, these are best eaten with softened butter, and maybe a smear of your favorite jam.

Irish Soda Bread Scones

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 tablespoon caraway seeds
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk

Preheat your oven to 435 degrees F.

Add the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda to a large bowl, whisking to combine.

Cut your butter into small cubes, then mix into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter (paid link) until the butter is evenly incorporated into the flour.

Stir in the raisins and caraway seeds.

Slowly pour in the buttermilk, mixing until just combined (it will be a little sticky).

Remove the dough from the bowl and place on a lightly floured surface. Shape into an 8-inch disk about 3/4 inch thick.

Use a knife or bench scraper (paid link) to cut the disk into eight wedges.

Transfer the wedges to the prepared sheet pan, evenly spaced.

Bake for 13 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Let the Irish Soda Bread Scones cool slightly on the pan, then serve warm with softened salted butter.

If you are a fan of Irish Soda Bread, you’re going to absolutely love these scones!

The scones have a nice texture to them, with pops of sweetness from the raisins balanced with the slight peppery anise flavor of the caraway seeds.

My favorite way to eat these is to also add a bit of currant jam as well as the butter before digging in!
