With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I figured February 14 was the perfect holiday to use rose water again. (I originally used it for a Rose Scented Berry Prosecco, which would also be lovely for Valentine’s Day). What better way to incorporate rose water but in sugar cookies? I adapted a traditional sugar cookie recipe from Allrecipes.com, and then also added a drizzled rose water icing to make these Rose Water Sugar Cookies.
Ingredients:
Rose Water Sugar Cookies:
- 3 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon rose water
Rose Water Icing:
- 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 1 tablespoon milk
- 1/8 teaspoon rose water
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 drop of food coloring, if desired
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees. To make the cookies, add the flour, baking soda, and baking powder to a medium bowl. Mix to combine.
In a large bowl, add the butter and sugar and mix using a hand mixer on low until well combined (about 2 minutes).
Add the eggs, vanilla extract, and rose water and mix on low for another minute.
Add half of the dry mixture to the wet mixture. Mix to combine. Add the second half and mix until combined.
On a floured surface, take 1/4 of the dough and roll it into a ball. Using a rolling pin, roll it out evenly on the counter.
Cut the dough using cookie cutters (I used heart ones, for Valentine’s Day of course).
Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes on cookie sheets lined with parchment paper.
To make the icing, combine the confectioners sugar, milk, rose water, food dye, and vanilla extract. Add more milk if you would like a thinner consistency.
After the cookies have completely cooled, drizzle the icing over the cookies. (place the cookies on more parchment paper before drizzling.
You can add sugar on top if you really have a sweet tooth!
Allow to set.
Gosh, I love rose water. The flavor comes through in the cookies and works really well with the sugary taste.
This recipe is really simple, but the unique taste makes it stand out.
Now don’t get me wrong, I’d never turn down a bouquet of roses. But these cookies would definitely win me over just as well! I used four different sized cookie cutters and ended up with 36 cookies in total.

I’ve been curious about rose water, and too afraid to try it. It’s not too soapy or perfume-y?
Kaitlin says
You definitely want to use rose water sparingly. It can have a bit of a purfume-y quality, but I actually really like it! It honestly tastes exactly how it smells, so give it a whiff to see if you like it. I think the flavor goes really well with sugar cookies 🙂

Is it 1 cup or 4 sticks of butter?
Kait Lun says
So sorry! Two sticks or 1 cup. I must have been using half sticks. I will change this tonight!

Where does the salt come in?
Kaitlin says
This recipe doesn’t require any salt. If you’d prefer, you can use salted butter
JanieP says
My batch did not turn out. Maybe I over mixed the dough. They turned out melted flat, and too buttery.
JanieP says
Oh. I just read the comment about the four sticks of butter. That’s why they didn’t work. I was tripping on the four sticks. Id never used that much in a batch of cookies before. I should have known that was wrong. 🙁
