Chocolate Bark

Bark is one of my favorite holiday treats to make. Why? Because it is so darn simple. And people LOVE it. It is basically melted chocolate with some other deliciousness thrown in. Candy, pretzels, nuts.. whatever makes you happy. I wanted to make some bark to supplement my cookies this year and found this fantastic recipe from Baked Bree. Bree included some Rice Krispies cereal in between the layers to add a little bit of extra crunch to the bark, brilliant! The red and green M&Ms and candy canes make this the perfect holiday treat.

Chocolate Christmas Bark

Ingredients (adapted from BakedBree.com)

  • 16 oz package dark chocolate chips
  • 16 oz package white chocolate chips
  • 1 cup Rice Krispies
  • 4 candy canes
  • 1 bag red and green M&Ms

Note: this will make one cookie sheet worth of bark. I suggest making 2-3 sheets so you have plenty to share!

Start by preparing all of your ingredients. Smash the candy canes. I used my food processor to get some fine dusting as well as some larger pieces but you can also add yours to a Ziploc bag and smash with a rolling pin.

Melt the dark chocolate by adding a metal bowl over a pot of simmering water, or by adding them to a microwave safe bowl and microwaving until just melted. (I prefer using the bowl over water to make sure you don’t overheat it)

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Spread the chocolate on the parchment paper making it as thin as you can (spread it all the way to the ends of the cookie sheet if you can)

Sprinkle with the Rice Krispies. Refrigerate the cookie sheet so that the chocolate can harden.

While the bottom layer is setting up, melt the while chocolate in the same way you melted the dark chocolate. White chocolate is kind of a frustrating little product and can seize up pretty quickly so be sure to watch it very carefully.

Add the melted white chocolate over the other layer of chocolate and spread it out.

Sprinkle the chocolate with M&Ms and crushed candy canes. Refrigerate for another 30 to 45 minutes or until hard.

Break apart the chocolate. I like doing this kind of randomly so that no piece is the same size.

Ta da! Told you it was simple. The addition of Rice Krispies is just brilliant. I love the extra pop you get when you bite in!

Many thanks to Bree for posting such a wonderful and easy to follow recipe! If you haven’t been to her blog before go there now. (https://bakedbree.com/) It’s fantastic and is going to make you awfully hungry, you’ve been warned!
